Nice Work If You Can Get It–Paying for Sports Through Cable

I’m thinking ahead to my upcoming IF project on the Future of Sports in a Democratic Society, and I’m sure that the economics of sports (and the sports and sports-media industries) is going to be a major theme. Here’s an interesting point from Frank Deford at NPR “If you pay for cable, you’re a hostage of sports”
. Even if you don’t watch sports (or a particular sport), if you have “cable,” you’re paying for sports and the media companies that live off of them. As our communication networks become an increasingly vital part of our capacity to be engaged democratic citizens, it’s interesting to think about how these spheres all intersect.
